Students applying for art and design courses

How to apply:
There are two ways to apply for art and design courses in York - Route A and Route B.

Route A is the standard UCAS application route for full time undergraduate courses. Click here for details.

If you are applying through Route A you can choose up to six courses. Your application will then be sent to each of your choices at the same time.

Route B is aimed at applicants studying a Diploma in Foundation Studies (Art and Design) to allow them time to identify a specialism and prepare a portfolio.

If you are applying through Route B you can list up to three courses. You will be asked to indicate your first, second and third choice and your application will then be sent to your choices in order of preference. If you receive, and accept, an offer from your first choice your remaining choices will be cancelled. If you do not receive an offer, or decline one, your application will be sent to your second choice and so on.

When to apply:
Route A: The deadline for this application route is 15 January in the year you hope to start the course.

Route B: For this route, UCAS needs to receive your application between 1 January and 24 March in the year you wish to start the course.

For further details on applying for art and design courses visit the UCAS website.

What happens next:
Route A: If you submit your application to UCAS before 15 January in the year you wish to start your course, by the end of March you should have received decisions from all the institutions you applied to.

If you apply between 15 January and June you should receive a decision by 20 July. Decisions on applications received through Clearing will be made by the institution as soon as possible.

If you receive an offer of a place it will be either an 'unconditional' or a 'conditional' offer. An unconditional offer is not dependant on you achieving certain grades, whereas a conditional offer requires you to obtain certain grades or points.

Once you have carefully considered any offers, you need to let UCAS know which you wish to accept. You can accept two conditional offers, with your second choice having lower grade requirements (or being an unconditional offer), or one unconditional offer.

Route B: You will have 14 days to reply to a route B offer. If you fail to reply within this time the offer will be withdrawn and your next choice will consider you during the next round of interviews. If you have applied for Route B courses only, you can only hold one offer.

A mixture of Route A and Route B: If you've applied for choices in both Route A and Route B, you can hold two offers, but you can only hold one offer in Route B.
