| York St John University has joined forces with City of York Council to allow York’s school governors to gain access to a brand new training and development scheme.
From September 2010, all governors and governing bodies will be able to choose from a range of training, including face-to-face and online options. Working in partnership with City of York Council, the training will give governors the opportunity to apply for their learning to be accredited by York St John and work towards a Foundation Certificate in School Governance.
Key areas of training include: The role of the School Governors; The role of the Clerk to the Governors; Leading the Governing Body; and School Improvement. The training has been developed in response to the increasingly demanding role of governors and the Education White Paper Your child, your schools, our future: building a 21st century schools system.
The partnership activity has been supported by Higher York; an existing and innovative partnership between Askham Bryan College, the University of York, York College, York St John University, Craven College and City of York Council.
Governors who choose for their learning to be accredited by the University will become students of the University and as such will have access to a range of benefits, including the use of all the facilities at York St John, a student card and additional support from their tutor.
Praising his experience, one student governor commented:
“This course has provided me with a sound base to go on and will serve my school well. An added bonus has been the opportunity to gain accreditation from the University.”
The new scheme was officially launched for school governors at York St John University on Thursday 24 June.
