Lord Mayor hosts Student Community Partnership Event

news414Last night key individuals from the city of York attended Higher York’s Student Community Partnership event. The event was set up by the city’s Students’ Unions to promote a number of campaigns aimed at improving student community engagement in York. Members of the newly elected council, Lord Mayor Councillor Sonja Crisp, Sheriff Brian Smith, Higher York partners and local business people were in attendance.

The event marked the launch of a number of campaigns within the Student Community Partnership. Amongst these campaigns was ‘Meet Yor Neighbour’, set up to improve integration and engagement between students and their communities. The campaign aims to encourage the 22,500 students of York to introduce themselves to their neighbours.

The event also highlighted the excellent contributions that students make to their local communities. Each year, the City benefits from many students participating in voluntary activity across York, with a remarkable 75,000 hours committed to various projects, organisations, and community groups.

The Student Community Partnership aims to ensure that students living in York are active and valued members of their local community, positively engaging in civic life and working in partnership with their neighbours to build stronger mutual respect.
